Guided by the site's inherent characteristics, the overarching concept underpinning the design of Foshan Park centers around the integration of 'clouds' as spatial elements, shaping the grand vision. This approach serves a twofold purpose: firstly, it symbolizes the site's pivotal role in bridging diverse communities and various segments of the city; concurrently, the imagery of weightless and buoyant clouds infuses the site with vigor, uplifting the urban vibrancy.
By dissolving the distinct boundaries between the site and its environs, the foundational landscape of the area is rendered more accessible, fostering interactive human engagement and cultivating a multifaceted and all-encompassing urban existence. Bolstered by the layered design, the space metamorphoses into a catalyst and nucleus for urban activities, while simultaneously assuming the role of a buffer zone during sudden influxes of pedestrian traffic, such as unforeseen emergencies.
The existing structures within the site, namely the Cantonese Opera Cultural Exchange Center and the Martial Arts Cultural Exchange Center, are preserved in their original positions. The site is stratified into two tiers, a progression derived from the site's transportation patterns. Initially, a lower-level bridge is erected to link the northern and southern sides, facilitating both pedestrian movement and accommodating tram construction. The upper tier is elevated, featuring a circular pathway that seamlessly interlinks traffic from all directions, ensuring a fluid and orderly flow. Both levels seamlessly interface with the surrounding environment, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity.
When I revisited the site in 2021, I was surprised to find that construction had been completed, and the once-under-construction area was now covered in lush vegetation. The fences had disappeared, revealing that the project wasn't for a tram track, as I had initially assumed, but rather for an upcoming subway line planned by Shunde District in Foshan City. Despite my initial misinterpretation, which arose from both on-site observations and online information, this incident highlighted a drawback of having the freedom to choose a topic – often, detailed site data is lacking.
However, mistakes can sometimes lead to unexpected outcomes. This experience motivated me to approach a potential challenge with a creative mindset. Throughout this design process, I even ventured into using Blender to craft more intricate structures around the area, providing a valuable opportunity for me to enhance my Blender skills.
Landscape design with a theme centered around time. Walking through the site gives the sensation of journeying through different eras.
This design assignment entails identifying a suitable spot within Nanjing's Yuyuan area and meticulously crafting an atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional Suzhou-style garden.
